How do you play Solitaire?

Solitaire is easy and fun to play once you understand what components make up a game. Once you've understood the rules you'll be ready to win your first game!

What areas make up a game of Solitaire

There are four areas to a game of Solitaire

  1. Foundation Piles: Four piles, one for each suit. This is where all your cards will end up. Cards in these piles are grouped by their suits and ascend starting with A end ending with K.
  2. Tableau Piles: Seven piles and the main focal point of the table.
  3. Stock/Hand Pile: These cards are kept face down. When you draw a card from this pile they're placed face up on the Waste pile. Only one card at a time can be moved, unless playing turn three, in which three cards are moved over at once.
  4. Waste/Talon Pile: Cards that have been drawn from the Stock pile, placed face up. Only the top card can be played. It can be moved to the Foundation or Tableau piles. If a card is used then the card below can be brought into play. Otherwise a new card can be drawn from the Stock pile and placed on top.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How many rows are in Solitaire?

When setting out a game of Solitaire you make seven columns, this area is known as the Tableau. Starting from the left you give the first column one card, the next column two cards, the next has three and you add an extra card to each column until you get to the seventh which has seven cards.

Only the top card of each column should be face up when starting a game of Solitaire.

Can Solitaire always be won?

Not every game is winnable, although around 80% of deals can be won.

If you prefer to only play winnable games you can choose to play a Winnable Deal or the Daily Challenge. Both of these game modes use deals that have previously been won by another player so are guaranteed winnable.
